Les Vosges, Sunday October 12

It’s kind of a short blog today. Off and on overcast, some times rainy, and some times when the sun peeked through. We spent the day up in the Vosges mountains, just to the west of our place in Bergheim. The views were quite enjoyable, and the roads quite twisty. Our little Opel Corsa handled the drive quite nicely. But for some reason, we just didn’t take too many pictures.

But here’s one to start things off. It’s a similar scene to one we saw a few days back—a nearby view at a time when the morning clouds were still settling in the valleys. Plus the customary vineyards and distant view of a small town.

Then we headed off into the hills. We hadn’t done too much preparation, so we just laid out a circle route that seemed to be a reasonable distance for a day trip, and we found it quite satisfactory.

The highlight of the day was our splurge meal, Sunday dinner at La Petite Auberge in the aptly named town of Hohwald, which comes straight from the German and means high forest. Here’s a link to their website. Click the British flag at the bottom of the home page to see it in English.

Veal stew in cream sauce, nicely accompanied by winter squash, tasty yellow carrots, and a tiny quiche for Bruce.
Culinary art!

Trout in browned butter and almonds for Sue Anne.
A bit more utilitarian in its layout, but very delicious.

It was a rather posh restaurant. The chef’s name was on the front cover of the menu. We had no reservations, but they found a corner for us. Merci. All the food was beautifully prepared and delicious!

We grabbed another picture on the main street of town. This house was so impressive.

Then it was further up into the hills, stopping at the local waterfall for a bit of an uphill hike and an opportunity for a drawing. It was called La Cascade in French. It is the kind of waterfall that gently makes it way down, dividing and reuniting its streams of water as it goes.

On the way back down the hills we saw some high meadows occupied by cows with bells around their necks. A little flash of an Alpine sight and sound.
